uuu cape fear is an authentic peckinpah movie, with his distinctive style and the deep humanity of the characters. though the plots and characters are sometimes unbelievable, the powerful sense of desperation, fear, and pathos that marks so many of peckinpah's works emerges through the movie, if not in the very first scene, then in the middle of the picture. that the story focuses on a fictional african-american family should not blind one to the central themes of fear, prejudice, and hatred that the film explores. this tension is illustrated by the three central characters: the kindly racist ward (rod steiger), the coldly professional killer jordan (robert mitchum), and the older brother, the lawyer russell (gregory peck). the film is well-acted and staged, and has a definite air of authenticity. it was nominated for a best picture academy award. contains strong language, some violence, and disturbing sequences of violence, including bloody bodies. r n v p
uuu a young man is a prime suspect for a murder that he didn't commit, but his dad knows he's innocent. his dad then gets the idea to turn the young man into a woman in order to trick the cops. his new persona is quite believable, although there's a lot of silliness along the way. it's the kind of film that earns its rating, but it's pretty tame stuff. a woman named michelle (played by j.k. simmons) is the hit of the film, but the movie itself is a hit-or-miss affair. p
uuu a swat team descends on a mansion, and when they come in, one of the men (samuel l. jackson) is lost, and he's assumed to be dead. but the story does have a lot of suspense, and the movie's pace and tone are about average. there are a few weird scenes (like the swat team taunting the murderer by waving a cat around) that may offend some viewers. and the ending is a bit of a letdown, but overall the film is a decent blend of suspense and humor. directed by david twohy, who also directed the decent baseball movie the sandlot. p v
